Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Perspective on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

Restorative Health Clinic offers Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome CFIDS patients a path to recovery that delivers consistent and lasting results in literally most cases. This is one fo the primary focus areas of our clinic. We have been actively treating patients with CFIDS successfully for many years and have a very good track record in delivering results to our patients satisfaction.

The reason Chronic Fatigue Syndrome CFS is so sadly under-treated and mistreated is because the medical community has a hard time grasping multi–aetiology, multi body system conditions.

Therefore, many patients receive a diagnosis linked to depression or other related mental emotional label as primary diagnosis when you are really feeling down due to feeling so poorly, not understood or heard by your medical system……..

More helpful is to simply use what we do know ~ Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome CFIDS is a disease that can be diagnosed using sensible criteria listed below:

The main symptom of CFS is extreme fatigue, which is:

  1. New,
  2. last at least 6 months
  3. is not relieved by bed rest.

Other symptoms include:

  • Post exercise fatigue that can last more than one full day to 5 days, non-restorative sleep, brain fog or fibro fog).
  • A new kind of headache, different from your usual kind
  • Irritability, vision changes or disturbances
  • Mild cyclical fever, (101 degrees F or less, usually in the mid 99’s) but also low body temperature is found in most patients
  • Muscle and joint aches, stiffness of muscles
  • Muscle pain in different places without a reasonable explanation
  • Sore throat, usually the first sign you are going to relapse or periodic, linked to feeling worse
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Low libido
  • Sore lymph nodes in the neck, under the jaw or under the arms
  • Sinus infections or chronic sinus congestion and drainage
  • Digestive tract problems, IBS, irritable colon, food allergies, SIBO
  • Frequent bladder infections, interstitial cystitis, pelvic pain conditions
  • Cardiomyopathy, palpitations, irregular heartbeat – sometimes linked to anxiety, dry mouth and eyes, frequent urination, blood pressure problems (high or low)

Multiple causes:

It is not in your head, in spite of what you may have heard. Read on to learn about the basic items we pay great attention to in doing a thorough analysis leading to clinical action items that delivers results.

  • High Stress, for longer than you can endure or recover from in a normal day-night or cyclical rest cycle. This uncompensated stress depletes your adrenal gland stores of DHEA and cortisol, neurotransmitters, tissue and cell vitality – to the extent that you run out of reserves and loose the ability to resist stress and compensate for stress and stressors. You start running on adrenaline as the next best stress hormone, but this causes fight and flight effects, racing heart, inability to tolerate stress and tendency to experience anxiety when feeling stressed.
  • Trauma (like motor vehicle accidents, falling off a horse etc), psychological or emotional traumas (which is usually one single big trauma like the loss of a loved one, divorce or other breakup, or a series of shocks and traumas in a row from which you do not recover and suffer physical symptoms )
  • Mood alterations with both depression and anxiety symptoms due to various processes and much of the time also the reality of not having the energy to live life at your own terms
  • Day night rhythm and sleep disruptions. Sleep is the most healing process in the body therefore getting you sleeping consistently well is key to unlocking the self healing principle. Sleep optimization always is the top and first priority. Sleeping consistently better causes pain and fatigue to improve nearly right away in most cases. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is an important yet often ignored aspect of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome. We work with sleep doctors that are experienced in diagnosing and treating OSA with CPAP machines or orthotic devices – which is also suitable to treat excessive snoring or upper airway resistance syndrome.
  • Immune System Problems include low immunity with decreased resistance to infections AND auto-immune problems like Hashimotos thyroid disease, allergies etc. Both low immunity and auto-immunity set the stage for more inflammation, pain and increased fatigue through various mechanisms.
  • Chronic infections, such as a viral, bacterial, parasitic or yeast/fungi – this is a VERY common problem and most patients don’t know they have the infection (core symptoms are fatigue, brain fog, sleep problems etc., with about half of adults not experiencing fevers, night sweats, sore throats etc) until after lab testing and review of findings. Viral: Herpes 4 HHV4 [ Epstein Barr Virus (EBV or Mono), Herpes Virus 6 and 7 (HHV6 HHV7), HSV1&2, other childhood viruses, after the “drop dead” flu, Parvo B19 (Fifth disease)
Bacterial and parasitic: Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Streptococcus, Lyme, Bartonella, Rickettsia, Babesia – in many patients we find and treat intestinal worms and parasites that contribute to various problems in the digestive, energy production, neurological and other systems.
Yeast and fungi: Candida is a very frequently encountered immune challenge that can cause a tremendous degree to fatigue and memory disturbance, chronic sinusitis and IBS without the typical oral or vaginal thrush.
  • Hormone imbalance, low hormones – thyroid hormone esp T3 and sometimes elevated T3 Reverse, low adrenal hormones (DHEA, pregnenolone, cortisol and much of the time adrenaline / noradrenaline is also low on testing) and ovarian / testicular hormones (estrogens, progesterone, testosterone)
  • Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome or MCS is a core part of many patient’s illness. Sensitivities to everyday chemicals, which are processed OK by most people, implies that your chemical processing is not the same as the average person. This causes problems with medicines and herbs at normal doses, household cleaners, diesel and exhaust fumes and perfumes and deodorants. This responds very well to treatment and makes the world of difference over the long term. Our sickest patients usually have an MCS component.
  • Biotoxin illness– especially problematic in the Pacific Northwest and other humid areas ~ mold and other biological toxins are a real problem due to their potency and the way certain genetic types struggle with this: immune activation, inflammatory problems, brain fog and most problematic, when the body cannot properly rid itself due to reabsorption in the digestive tract. There are effective ways to break the cycle of re-cycling the biotoxins. Occasionally this leads to wonderful improvement. Yet again, [ongoing] dose of exposure and genetic susceptibility determines how significantly you are going to be affected and the duration of the recovery period.
  • Toxic metals, heavy metals and industrial and agricultural toxins– various metals cause and contribute to the development of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome. This is a real problem and we test most of our patients for increased body stores of metals using a provoked urine collection method. Mercury (from industry, suggestedly coal power plant emissions from China, amalgams, (farmed or atlantic) fish, environmental), lead, thallium, cadmium, uranium, aluminum and a handful of other metals cause multi-system metabolic disruption that metals are classified as mitochondrial – , endocrine – , immune – , neurological – disruptors and can cause chronic persistent disease in many body systems. Usually, the older we become, the more time there is for biological accumulation of metals in our tissues. If there are any signs of chemical sensitivity or processing problems your body will accumulate and store more metals than the average person. Chelation therapy with as done in our office and under our guidance at home is effective, safe and typically delivers good results.
  • Nutritional factors– with the current state of agriculture, GMO’s, depleted soils, the disastrous health effects of the Standard American Diet and increased dietary requirements during states of disease – deficiencies are present in most patients with multi system disease. Focused intervention with nutrient patterns specific for the needs of the immune system, adrenal glands, mitochondrial needs, detoxification system among others are essential for systems revival.
  • Genetic or family inheritance– multi system illness like fibromyalgia does occur in families, especially in mother-daughter pairs. In addition to inherited ability to process chemicals, fight off infections, there is a common exposure to agricultural, industrial, bio toxins, infections, dietary, lifestyle and behavior patterns that is learned in families.

Aggravating symptoms:

Fibromyalgia patients are often experience many symptoms in numerous body systems.  in addition to aggravations from emotional upset, exposures to odors, temperature and seasonal changes to name a few.

Conditions that overlap Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome:

  • Chronic neck or back pain
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Depression
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Lyme disease
  • Sleep disorders

In European countries, with socialized health systems, CFIDS is mostly treated as a mental-emotional condition. Mind body techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy are favored, though not considered to be very effective by many. It is helpful up to the point of changing your thinking about your health condition but does not do anything to help the condition. We find this approach unsatisfactory as a main treatment as a lot can and should be done to help improve the condition itself.

Action is required:

What we do know about the causes of CFIDS and clinical mitochondrial dysfunction-fatigue conditions are the following identified causes:

We do detailed and extensive testing in many body systems to figure out why you are feeling tired, even if your onset of fatigue is strongly linked to an event like childbirth, trauma, chemical exposure, period of stress etc.

It is very important to identify as many of the factors that contribute to fatigue and also factors that block recovery as is possible and reasonable as that is what determines effective outcomes, which the single most important – you get to feel better!

Sadly, most conventional treatments are still solely palliative and only aimed at symptom control. And also inadequate.

Effective treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or CFIDS is highly individualized, much more so than can be outlined on this page. The algorithm takes up a whole wall in my office. Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum MD has structured the most important steps to help turn CFIDS around and calls this system SHINE, which has stood the test of almost 3 decades time now.

Treatment structure for healing Chronic Fatigue: SHINE

Stabilize the system through ensuring regular restorative SLEEP, treat pain, anxiety, depression, and then again, make sure sleep protocols are in place and effective.

Balance and optimize HORMONES [thyroid with T3 and T4 therapy, stabilize hashimotos, support and adrenals and prescribe cortisol, fludrocortisone if needed, optimize DHEA, pregnenolone, balance and support estrogen, progesterone and testosterone].

Infections with all classes of organisms are treated effectively naturally and with prescription medicines [viral: Epstein-Barr, Cytomegalo, HHV6, Parvo, HSV1&2; bacterial: Mycoplasma and Chlamydia pneumoniae, Strep group A, Lyme borreliosis, Rickettsia, Babesia, Bartonella cat scratch fever; fungal: candida, other yeasts, mold and mold toxins are an especially prevalent, testable and treatable problem; parasitic: parasite testing and treatment are incredibly important and needed – most people do not know they have parasites. ]

Identify and detoxify the various classes of chemicals known to cause and contribute to fatigue and mitochondrial dysfunction. Metals, agricultural & industrial toxins, biological toxins like mold toxin must be removed or detoxed. Identifying weak detox organs, genetic detox blocks involving methylation or MTHFR, COMT, CBS, glutathione GSTM, SOD super oxide dysmutase, liver, kidneys and lymphatic.

Mitochondrial rescue protocols consisting of supporting through focused nutritional protocols, healing structure, function with increased energy production and oxygen usage as results. Hormones and nutrients are essential to effectively resuscitate the power packs of the cells. Proton gradients across mitochondrial membranes need to be restored, ozone or major autohemotherapy works well, but we can also incorporate PQQ Pyrroloquinoline Quinone for this purpose.

Diet is the most important foundational treatment to ensure better and quicker results.

Exercise, mental-emotional healing, family healing, forgiveness, reconditioning your body.

We have carefully studied the most effective treatments for every single identified aspect of CFIDS, and have safe, effective protocols to help turn this condition around. You can have your life back.
