Prolotherapy

Restorative Treatment for Musculoskeletal Pain

Are you experiencing joint pain, arthritis, tendonitis or pain from a new or old injury? Prolotherapy may be a curative procedure that can restore proper function and eliminate pain at almost any area of the body. Prolotherapy is a recognized orthopedic procedure that involves the treatment of ligaments and tendons. When these tissues are injured the result is a weak, painful and unstable joint. Because tendons and ligaments have an incomplete blood flow, incomplete healing is common.

How Does it Work?

A proliferating agent is injected into precise areas in and around and injured ligament or tendon. This creates a localized inflammatory reaction which increases blood flow to the joint, brings in reparative elements and initiates our body’s healing process. The new tissue growth had proven to be strong and permanent.

Examples of Effective Treatment Sites for Prolotherapy.

  • Knee: Ligament sprains, Meniscus Tears, Patellar tendonitis, arthritis, chondromalacia.
  • Ankle/Foot: Ankle Sprains, Plantar Fascitis, Chronic Achilles Tendinosis.
  • Wrist/Hand: Chronic Thumb Sprain or Strain, Joint Arthritis of fingers and thumb, Wrist Sprains
  • Elbows: Epicondylitis- Tennis and Golfers Elbow, other ligament injuries.
  • Shoulder: Rotator Cuff, Bicep Tendinitis, Ligament Sprains, A-C Joint Pain, Separated Shoulder.
  • Spine: Sacroiliac Ligaments, Low back Pain, Iliolumbar ligaments, Interspinous Ligaments.
  • Hip/Pelvis: Bursitis, Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction, Joint Arthritis, Symphysis Pubis Pain.

Prolotherapy initiates a localized immune response, promoting the body’s ability to heal itself. Also known as regenerative injection therapy, it involves the treatment of both tendons (which attach muscle to bone and involve joint movement) and ligaments (which attach bone to bone and are responsible for joint stability). When these tissues are repeatedly injured, the result is a weak, painful and unstable joint. Because ligaments and tendons generally have a poor blood supply, incomplete healing is common after injury.

The physiology behind this technique is actually quite simple. “Prolo” is short for proliferation, as it leads to the formation and growth of new tissue in the area that has become weak and painful. The injection of dextrose (sugar water) causes a localized inflammatory reaction in the joint. This inflammation increases blood flow, bringing in tissue-building cells known as fibroblasts, and stimulating the healing process. The fibroblasts lay down collagen, an essential building block necessary to repair the area. MRI and x-ray imaging before and after prolotherapy show that it significantly regenerates the joint tissue.

The development of new, healthy tissue is a permanent result–prolotherapy provides a lasting improvement in joint function and a reduction in pain. In comparison to surgery, it is less invasive, less expensive and requires shorter recovery time. If you have joint instability or pain, regardless of the cause, prolotherapy may be an option to help you regain pain-free movement and start enjoying activities again.
