Trigger Point Injections

Chronic headaches, neck stiffness and other musculoskeletal pains are depleting to the human body, both physically and emotionally. Tight or sore muscles are often accompanied by trigger points, more commonly referred to as “knots.” These tender bundles of contracted muscle irritate surrounding nervous tissue and cause pain that radiates to other areas of the body. The combined local and radiating pain add more stress to the body, encouraging muscle spasm and continuing the cycle of musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain. Trigger point injections directly interrupt this cycle, offering immediate and long term relief.

Muscle hypertonicity (tightness) and spasm may be caused by one or more factors:

  • Chronic stress
  • Overuse injury
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Poor posture
  • Musculoskeletal misalignment
  • Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome

At Restorative Health Clinic, our physicians see great success with using trigger point injection therapy to treat musculoskeletal-related migraines, headaches, neck pain, back pain, knee and shoulder pain. At each visit, a combination of sterile 1% Procaine (a short-acting anesthetic) is combined with injectable Methylcobalamin (active, methylated vitamin B12) and injected into tender trigger points, allowing the muscle to relax and the radiating pain to subside.

The injections, which take between 10 to 45 minutes, are believed to work through disruption of the nervous system’s feedback loop which is responsible for the ongoing cycle of muscular spasm and discomfort. The pain signal is temporarily interrupted by the injection, allowing the muscle to relax so that the signal has stopped altogether by the time the anesthetic wears off. Additional therapeutic effect is gained through the methylated vitamin B12, which nourishes the nervous tissue.

Depending upon your needs, additional injectables are sometimes added to further enhance healing and decrease pain:

Injectable homeopathic medicines (Heel)
Lymphomyosot – for lymphatic drainage & edema
Traumeel – for pain & inflammation
Engystol – for immune support, body aches & malaise
Coenzyme Compositum – for exhaustion & poor energy
And many more!

Ozone Therapy
Ozone (O3) can be added to increase the pro-circulatory & anti-inflammatory effects of trigger point injections. Please see our page on “Prolozone” for more information.
